Shivneri Fort is a historic fort located in the Junnar taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra, India. It is situated on a hill about 1,200 meters above sea level and is known for its historical significance as it was the birthplace of the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The fort has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it was under the control of the Bahmani Sultanate. It was later captured by the Nizamshahi dynasty in 1595, and then by the Mughals in 1635. It was during the Mughal period that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1630, and he spent his early years on the fort.
The fort is spread over an area of about 1.5 square kilometers and has several notable structures such as the Shivai Devi temple, a mosque, a statue of Jijabai (Shivaji’s mother), and a statue of Shivaji himself. The fort also has several water tanks, including the Shivkalin Water Supply System, which was designed to provide water to the fort even during times of drought.
